Mayor's December Newsletter

Dear Mission Woods Residents -

It has been a privilege to serve as Mayor of Mission Woods these past eight months. Not only have I had the opportunity to help keep the city running and to improve on a few processes, but it has been an invaluable education for me. I now have a better appreciation of all the considerations in keeping a city vibrant, and I will take those lessons forward to help me be a better City Council member starting in the new year.

Mission Woods Terrace Safety
Robert Tietze and I had an initial meeting earlier this month with Public Works Director John Sullivan and Lee Baer, a traffic engineer. Our initial objective is to make any changes we can that will help drivers navigate the Rainbow Boulevard / Shawnee Mission Parkway / Mission Woods Terrace intersection. The intent is to do what we can to improve the safety of the intersection prior to a potential recasting of Rainbow in a few years. We're looking into reflective turn arrows as well as signage to emphasize that most drivers will need to make a turn at Shawnee Mission Parkway.

New Crossing Guard
In the December meeting, the City Council voted to approve funds for a crossing guard at the Rainbow Boulevard / Shawnee Mission Parkway intersection. The guard is contracted for an hour in the morning and afternoon, to coincide with school start and ending times. The cost for this service next year will be about $13,000.

Revised Trash Ordinance Under Consideration
With the intent of keeping Mission Woods the attractive city it is, the Council discussed revisions to City code that would make it more clear when trash receptacles can be out for collection and where they need to be placed the rest of the week. The Council will hear any discussion of the revised ordinance prior to a potential vote during the January meeting. You can view the revised code here

The next Council meeting is Tuesday, January 9 at 7 p.m., at which time the new Mayor and City Council members will be sworn in. Please feel free to attend.

Best,

Keith
